Not What She Planned: Finding a Haven at EPFMC
Ronda Minks appeared to have an ideal life. She and her husband ran their own business. They lived in a stately Hancock Park home with their two young children. Her daughter attended a prestigious private school.
But appearances can be deceiving. Despite her cheery demeanor, Ronda was a victim of domestic abuse. “It started as verbal abuse, then turned to emotional abuse. When it got physical, I knew I had to leave,” she said.
After Ronda fled, her husband managed to seize the business and the house, leaving her with nothing.
She works as a financial planner and sells skincare products on the side, but the money doesn’t go far. She and her children now live in a tiny apartment in West Hollywood, and she struggles to pay the rent.
With money so tight, Ronda turned to Eisner Pediatric & Family Medical Center for help. “I’ve never had to go to a Clinic before, and I found them to be very understanding and helpful,” she says. “I’m really impressed with how they handle everything.”
For her own care, Rhonda sees Deborah Lerner, MD, in the Women’s Center, while her four-year-old son, AJ, and ten-year-old daughter, Rachel, receive care from pediatrician Lily Hwang, MD. The children have come for routine checkups and vaccinations and have also gotten referrals for specialty care such as physical therapy, dermatology, and vision care.
When her daughter needed blood work, Ronda was sure Rachel would have a meltdown. It didn’t happen. “The technicians who draw blood are the best,” she marvels.
On another occasion, when Rachel did get upset about receiving a flu shot, “Everyone was so nice and so patient. They’re always ready to help,” Ronda says.
She also appreciates how volunteers keep the children entertained with activities, such as arts and crafts and a reading corner. These small touches make a big difference.
Despite the setbacks in her life, Ronda expects to get back on her feet. But it will take time. And knowing that Eisner Pediatric & Family Medical Center is there for her and her children means one less burden for her to bear.
